Shillong: The Meghalaya Government and Elaka Saitsohpen on Friday signed a landmark agreement, resolving a 45-year land dispute and restoring 128 acres of government-held land to the Elaka.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said the land was taken during British administration in the 1820s and has now been returned in full ownership, not on lease. He praised the Elaka’s decades-long perseverance and called Saitsohpen the “brain of the subdivision.”
GAD Minister Sosthenes Sohtun said the settlement will unlock long-delayed development, while Sohra MLA Gavin M. Mylliem noted that the breakthrough reflects strong coordination between the MDA Government and the Elaka.
Shella MLA Balajied Kupar Synrem announced that a ₹114-crore project will now move forward, as previous initiatives were stalled due to unclear land titles.
For residents long unable to register land, build homes, or access loans, the agreement opens a new chapter of clarity and growth for Saitsohpen.
