Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Friday revealed that a total of 124 consultants have been engaged to serve various departments and specific projects within the state.
The Chief Minister while responding to TMC MLA Miani D Shira query, disclose that an aggregate sum of Rs 22.56 crore has been disbursed to these consultants during the current financial year. Additionally, Sangma pointed out that a group of 59 consultants is currently dedicated to Externally Aided Projects (EAP).
Shira sought clarification regarding the allocation of these consultants, specifically inquiring about the 65 consultants not designated for EAPs.
Sangma clarified that these consultants, who possess technical expertise, are brought in for specific tasks. He emphasized that they operate as a contractual team of experts in their respective fields and are crucial in two key areas: Centrally Sponsored Schemes and Externally Aided Projects.
“In both of these categories,” the Chief Minister elaborated, “the use of consultants is mandated by the guidelines of the various departments. In many cases, we rely on their expertise to expedite our projects and seek their advice.”
Furthermore, Sangma proudly informed the legislative body that Meghalaya has secured Rs 132 crores for a project named “Unity,” in which the Prime Minister allocates funds to states. Notably, Meghalaya achieved this milestone within a six-month timeframe, making it one of only three states in the country to do so.
Sangma attributed this achievement to the invaluable expert advice they have received, allowing them to submit proposals promptly and receive funds on schedule.
That concludes this report on the Chief Minister’s revelations about consultant appointments and their impact on project execution in Meghalaya. Stay tuned for more updates on this and other significant developments.
