Shillong: Six individuals have been arrested in connection with the recent recovery of an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) at Umsning market in Ri Bhoi district, Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home, Prestone Tynsong, confirmed on Friday.
He said the investigation is ongoing and more arrests are likely.
“The investigation is currently underway, and further arrests are anticipated,” Tynsong stated.
Reaffirming the government’s strong stance on internal security, he said, “We will not compromise on the safety and security of our state. The government will take all necessary measures to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.”
The Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) had claimed responsibility for the IED, calling it a symbolic protest against what it termed the betrayal of the indigenous community by corrupt politicians and businessmen.
Responding to the outfit’s statement, Tynsong questioned the validity of the claim.
“The HNLC needs to clarify what specific compromises have been made with the indigenous community. We, as elected representatives, are committed to serving the people and the state,” he said.
Tynsong declined to reveal further details, citing the sensitivity of the case.
“We cannot disclose more information at this stage, as it may compromise the investigation. The police will provide updates once the probe is complete,” he added.
The incident occurred on October 12 when police detected and safely diffused a suspected IED in Umsning market, averting a potentially catastrophic situation.
Ri Bhoi Superintendent of Police V. Rathore earlier revealed that the device contained 4.7 kg of gelatine, 10 detonators, and around 50 iron rod pieces used as splinters. All materials were seized and necessary precautions were taken.
