SHG Federation Appeals to Conrad Sangma Over Operational Challenges Affecting Livelihoods

HEADLINES

The Federation of Meghalaya Self Help Groups & Mahila Mandal has appealed to Conrad K Sangma for government intervention to protect the livelihoods of Self Help Groups (SHGs) facing operational challenges.

In a memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister, the federation acknowledged the opportunities provided through the Integrated Child Development Services, which has helped many SHGs generate income while contributing to community welfare.

However, the groups highlighted several difficulties affecting their operations, including outdated transportation rates, partial quarterly payments, and rejection of certain non-conventional food items, which they say has resulted in financial losses and wastage of resources.

The SHGs urged the government to revise transportation rates in line with current market conditions, ensure full and timely quarterly payments, review the rejection of non-conventional food items, and reassess pricing for fortified food items to ensure sustainability.

The federation stated that these challenges are impacting not only the financial stability of SHG members but also their ability to continue supporting nutrition programmes in the community.

They have requested the state government to intervene and take necessary steps to ensure fairness, sustainability and stability in the system.
