Ri Bhoi to Host Unique ‘Ñiangtaser’ Insect Festival at Saiden in April

HEADLINES

The Ri Bhoi Tourism & Environmental Development Forum is set to organise a unique cultural celebration centred on the insect ‘Ñiangtaser’, also known as the Niang World Cup, in Ri Bhoi district.

The two-day festival will be held on April 8–9 at Ïewsier, Saiden, near the Nongkhyllem Wildlife Sanctuary.

Ñiangtaser, a beetle species that appears once every four years between April and May, forms the highlight of the event. The festival is inspired by its rare cycle, drawing a parallel with global sporting events.

The celebration will feature a variety of cultural and recreational activities including traditional dance and folk song competitions, a fashion show, and a football tournament at Saiden playground. A fishing competition will also be held at the Ïewsier river on April 9, with cash prizes for participants.

Chairman Plielad Tiewsoh invited the public to attend the festival, stating that the event aims to showcase the rich culture and traditions of the region.

Visitors are expected to get a glimpse of the unique heritage and natural biodiversity of Ri Bhoi through the celebration.
