Relocation of Mawïong Marten Landfill Stalled Pending Public Hearing

HEADLINES

Shillong, November 1 – The proposed relocation of the Mawïong landfill remains stalled, despite growing demands to move the site due to environmental concerns as it serves as a waste disposal hub for Shillong. Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, responsible for Urban Development, cited the delay as resulting from the inability to conduct necessary public hearings in the areas under consideration for relocation.

Dhar acknowledged that the Mawïong site poses environmental risks but noted that relocation efforts have faced opposition from local communities, even after identifying potential sites in Nonghali, Umraleng, and Kyrdemkulai. The Shillong Municipal Board and Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board, along with district authorities, are tasked with organizing the public hearings to move forward.

Addressing waste management challenges in Jowai, which has also been severely impacted by a lack of suitable disposal facilities, Dhar mentioned that a fresh Expression of Interest (EOI) would be issued to find an appropriate site for a new landfill.
