Police probe death of woman who fell from moving car in Shillong

HEADLINES

Shillong: Police in East Khasi Hills have launched a detailed investigation into the death of one woman, who succumbed to injuries days after falling from a moving vehicle driven by her boyfriend.

The man was arrested in connection with the case and later released on bail, Superintendent of Police (SP) Vivek Syiem confirmed on Tuesday.

The incident occurred late on the night of November 7, at around 11:50 pm. According to police, she was picked up by her boyfriend after attending a wedding at All Saints Cathedral. The couple was travelling towards Police Bazaar when, near the DC Office junction, witnesses reportedly saw her fall out of the car.

She battled for her life for nearly a week before passing away on November 13 at Woodland Hospital. “The medical report indicates the cause of death as trauma resulting from spinal injury,” SP Syiem said.

As part of the investigation, police have seized the vehicle involved and taken the accused’s statement. “We are looking into all possible angles—whether the fall was accidental, caused by rash driving, or if there was any deliberate attempt to push her out of the car,” Syiem said, adding that CCTV footage from the area is being thoroughly examined.

The case was set in motion after the victim’s brother lodged an FIR on November 10.

Police say further findings are expected as more evidence is scrutinised.
