Shillong: Reminding the people of a “hero” who resigned just an hour after the then Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Dr Mukul tabled the Dual Post bill that prevents legislators from holding dual post in both State Legislative Assembly and any Autonomous District Council.

Lyngdoh while speaking to reporters on Monday said, “.. there is that one hero who resigned as an MDC under one hour of the bill being tabled by the then Chief Minister Dr Mukul”.

“The session was not even dismissed but his resignation letter have already reached Mukul Sangma’s table”, he added.

It may be mentioned, on September 24, 2015, the then HSPDP vice president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit today submitted his resigtion letter to quit his duties as an MDC to the KHADC Chairman Manstudy Nongrem. The decision of Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit to quit as an MDC came after the Cabinet passed the Prevention of Disqualification (Members of the Legislative Assembly of Meghalaya) Amendment Bill, 2015 in the ongoing Autumn Assembly Session in order to prevent holding of dual posts.

Lyngdoh however said that no one remembers the lone MDC who took to court against the Bill, and eventually won the case.

“The High Court have declared that the post of an MDC is not an office of profit and that MDC is Bah P.N Syiem”, credit where credit’s due, added Paul Lyngdoh.

Paul Lyngdoh further stated that, “you talk about trading license, I have finished my duty and you have seen it. The ministers at that time even reached District Council because it was hampering their voters, but I said no, if we work just as we take oath everytime without fear or favour, affection or ill-will, therefore when I was handling the department of trading this letter reached the Prime Minister of the Country.”

He further added that the letter was then endorsed to the NEC after which it was sent to the state government and the state government asked for the position of the District Council regarding this matter and it was made sure that after a re-shuffle of works in the District Council the trading will not reach him for continuation.
