Voice of the People Party (VPP) President Ardent M Basaiawmoit has asserted that the recent MP and MDC elections have demonstrated that the people of Khasi-Jaintia Hills resonate with the party’s ideology.
In the recently concluded MDC elections, the VPP secured 17 seats in the KHADC, allowing it to govern independently, while in JHADC, it won 8 seats, falling short of a majority and taking a position in the opposition.
Speaking to the media, Basaiawmoit highlighted that VPP secured a higher vote share than the NPP in the elections. In KHADC, VPP received 37% of the votes, while NPP got 25%. In Jaintia Hills, NPP led with 32%, while VPP closely followed with 31%.
He attributed the party’s lower success rate in JHADC to alleged unfair election conditions, stating that voters were not given a free and fair choice, unlike in the KHADC elections. He further alleged that the ruling party misused power to suppress its opponents in Jaintia Hills.
