Paul grills Metbah in Assembly; Conrad steps in to clarify

HEADLINES

Shillong: West Shillong MLA, Paul Lyngdoh Paul Lyngdoh did not held back on pressing his party chief in the Assembly on Tuesday as he alleged that Power Minister, Metbah Lyngdoh gave an incomplete reply to his question regarding job appointments for landowners affected by power projects.

Raising the issue during Question Hour, Paul sought clarity on the policy for appointing locals whose land has been acquired for power projects. In his initial response, the Power Minister stated that direct appointments are provided only to affected landowners, specifically for Grade C and Grade D posts, as per agreements signed with them.

However, in a supplementary question, Paul pressed further, asking what safeguards are in place to ensure priority employment for local residents under the Power Department. Dissatisfied with the reply, he again stood up, claiming the minister had not fully addressed the query. He then asked whether the Meghalaya Industrial and Investment Promotion Policy 2024 is being implemented by the Power Department. Metbah confirmed that the policy is in effect.

When Paul questioned whether the department was fully complying with provisions related to reservation for locals, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma intervened to assist the minister in responding.

Other MLAs who raised supplementary questions included Banteidor Lyngdoh, MLA from Mawkynrew and Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit, MLA from Nongkrem.
