HEADLINES

Shillong: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday informed the Assembly that the Meghalaya government has generated more than 3.66 lakh employment opportunities through various government programmes implemented so far.

However, the Chief Minister noted that unemployment remains a challenge as Meghalaya is a young state with a large youth population, estimated at around 18 lakh.

He was replying to a question raised by Rajabala MLA Mizanur Kazi in the Assembly.

Sangma said the government has allocated ₹140 crore under the FOCUS scheme, benefiting around 22,500 Progressive Groups and approximately 2.5 lakh individuals. Under FOCUS Plus, ₹121 crore has been allocated, benefiting about 1.5 lakh people.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister also stressed the need to train Khasi and Garo MLAs to speak the Khasi and Garo languages in addition to English. He informed the House that the government has decided to introduce Khasi and Garo language instruction in schools from this year so that students can learn to speak and understand the languages better.

He said the initiative is expected to promote unity and strengthen social cohesion in the state.
