Shillong: The Opposition in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has not yet decided on a candidate for the post of Chief Executive Member (CEM) following the sudden resignation of Bah Shemborlang Rynjah of the Voice of the People Party (VPP). Rynjah, the MDC from Lyngkyrdem, stepped down on September 24 citing health issues.
With his resignation, the entire Executive Committee has collapsed, necessitating the formation of a new one after the election of a fresh CEM.
Leader of the Opposition, Bah Titosstarwell Chyne, informed that Opposition MDCs have not yet deliberated on fielding a candidate for the post. He added that the decision will only be considered after the Governor convenes a special session of the Council to elect the new CEM.
Chyne also revealed that he had personally spoken to the outgoing CEM and extended his best wishes for a speedy recovery.
In the 30-member House, the VPP currently enjoys a majority with 18 MDCs, including one nominated member. The Opposition holds 12 members — 5 from the NPP, 5 from the UDP, 1 from the HSPDP, and 1 Independent.
