Only 2 km of border fenced out of 40 km in Amlarem, says MLA

  • Shillong: Amlarem MLA Lahkmen Rymbui on Friday expressed concern over the lack of fencing along the India-Bangladesh border in his constituency. He informed that out of approximately 40 km of border falling within Amlarem, only about 2 km has been fenced with barbed wire so far.

Speaking to reporters, Rymbui stated that while the border area remains relatively secure at present due to the strict vigilance of the BSF, especially in the wake of rising tensions between India and Pakistan, the issue of incomplete fencing still poses a long-term security concern.

He noted that local resistance to fencing stems from fears of losing land and even entire villages, as fencing is often erected 150 yards inside from the actual boundary line. “This means many homes and farmlands could end up outside the fence,” he explained.

Rymbui emphasised the need for the government to properly sensitise and engage with local communities to address these concerns and strike a balance between national security and the rights of border residents.
