No railway project without public consent: CM Conrad

HEADLINES

Shillong: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday said that the State Government will not proceed with any railway project in Meghalaya without first obtaining the consent of the people.

Speaking to the media, Sangma stressed the need for broad-based agreement on railway projects in the Khasi–Jaintia Hills region, stating that the government would move forward only after thorough consultations and once consensus is achieved.

He pointed out that although the government had constituted a committee to deliberate on the issue, political parties and pressure groups chose not to participate in the process.

While acknowledging that railway connectivity is crucial for economic growth, the Chief Minister said the government must exercise caution and conduct a detailed and careful assessment before taking any final decision.
