Shillong: The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) has announced that all seven states of the Northeast will observe December 11 as Black Day to reiterate their opposition to the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), 2019.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, NESO reminded citizens that December 11 marks the day in 2019 when the Government of India passed the CAA in the Rajya Sabha, despite what it described as “relentless opposition from the indigenous peoples of the region.” The organisation said the enactment of the law amounted to “another political injustice” imposed on the Northeast.
NESO said that as part of this year’s observance, black flags and black banners will be displayed at prominent locations across all seven Northeastern states on December 11, 2025. The organisation declared that the day will continue to be remembered as a symbol of resistance against the Act.
“This observation is to send a clear message to the Government of India that we remain opposed to the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019,” the statement read. “It is also a reminder to our people and to future generations of the injustice perpetrated against the indigenous communities of the Northeast.”
Calling for collective participation, NESO urged the people of the region to stand united in the continued struggle for their rights. “NESO calls upon all the people of the Northeast to support this observation and to keep fighting for the just cause which is our God-given right,” it said.
