NEHUTA slams Prof. P. S. Shukla for virtually claiming to resume as VC

HEADLINES

The North-Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA) has strongly criticized Vice-Chancellor Prof. P. S. Shukla for claiming to have resumed his duties despite not officially rejoining the university after months of earned leave.

In a press release signed by NEHUTA President Prof. Lakhon Kma and General Secretary Dr. Marbhador M. Khymdeit, the association expressed deep concern over Prof. Shukla’s unprecedented move. They stated that in NEHU’s 50-year history, no one has ever resumed duty virtually while remaining absent from the university headquarters in Shillong.

NEHUTA accused Prof. Shukla of violating NEHU’s Act, Statutes, and Ordinances by asserting that he has resumed his role despite allegedly being on an official tour. The teachers’ body argued that such an action undermines the institution’s governance and sets a dangerous precedent.

Adding to the controversy, Prof. Shukla is currently under inquiry for alleged mismanagement and wrongdoings at the university. NEHUTA highlighted that the findings of this inquiry are yet to be made public and that he had been advised to go on leave until the investigation was completed. The association questioned how he could claim to have resumed office without physically returning to the campus.

NEHUTA further criticized Prof. Shukla’s tenure, stating that his leadership had already pushed NEHU to its lowest point. They warned that his latest move would only bring further chaos and confusion to the university. Calling his attempt to resume duty “unstatutory and blatantly violative” of university norms, the teachers’ body urged authorities to intervene and uphold the integrity of NEHU’s administration.

It is worth noting that Prof. Shukla had gone on leave on November 15, 2024, amid an ongoing student strike at the university. In his leave application, he cited “unavoidable circumstances” for taking earned leave from November 15, followed by additional leave from November 17 to November 29, with the possibility of an extension if necessary.

During his absence, senior-most professor Nirmalendu Saha was appointed as the Acting Vice Chancellor.
