Shillong: Deputy Chief Minister and Transport Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar on Wednesday visited the two NEHU students admitted to the ICU of Nazareth Hospital after an overspeeding car rammed into them inside the campus. Dhar termed the incident “horrifying and tragic” and announced that the government will bear the entire medical expenses for both victims — Daritngen Pohdukhei and Stephanie Shadap. One of the students is stable, while the other remains in a serious condition.
He said the government is ready to refer them outside the state if their condition does not improve within the next few days. Dhar also confirmed that the accused driver, Permen M. Sangma, a NEIGRIHMS security guard, has been arrested. Police have booked him for attempt to murder after medical tests confirmed he was intoxicated during the incident.
The accident occurred on Monday evening near NEHU Gate No. 2. CCTV footage shows the car speeding, first crashing into a scooty and the gate before hitting the students. SP Vivek Syiem said this is not a simple traffic case and that further investigation is underway.
