Nangmendalgre village, once notorious as a hub of insurgency and the hideout of Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militants has undergone a dramatic transformation into a tourist destination, drawing visitors from far and wide.
Located in East Garo Hills, the village of infamous GNLA leader Sohan D Shira, was previously avoided by tourists due to militant activity, but with peace restored, it has emerged as a scenic spot for tourism in recent years.
East Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner (DC) Vibhor Agarwal, speaking to reporters, highlighted the overall improvement in law and order in the district, noting that numerous development projects are now underway.
One key project is the Nengmandalgre Fish Sanctuary at the Chibok River, which was established in 2005. This sanctuary has become a significant attraction, drawing tourists to the once-dangerous area.
DC Agarwal also shared plans for further developments, including the construction of a park in Williamnagar, which will serve as another attraction for tourists. Additionally, a museum in Williamnagar town is set to open soon, offering yet another boost to the district’s growing tourism industry.
