Shillong: Muster roll workers under the banner of the Meghalaya Muster Roll Workers Union on Tuesday staged a peaceful march in Shillong, protesting what they termed the government’s continued silence on their long-pending demands.
The march was organised by the Joint Action Committee of the union on Tuesday. The rally began from the premises of U Soso Tham Auditorium, proceeded through Barik and Malki, and concluded at the same venue. During the march, the workers carried placards and raised slogans demanding their rights and urging the government to address their grievances.
Prior to the rally, a meeting was held at U Soso Tham Auditorium where leaders from different districts addressed the gathering and highlighted the difficulties faced by muster roll workers across the state.
Among their key demands are the timely payment of salaries and the regularisation of workers who have served for more than 10 years by appointing them to various posts such as peon, mali, chowkidar and others.
The workers also demanded maternity leave for women employees, paternity leave for men, and that the retirement age be fixed at 65 years.
