Mumbai City FC Secure 2-0 Victory Over NorthEast United FC in Shillong

HEADLINES

Mumbai City FC handed NorthEast United FC their first defeat in nine games, securing a 2-0 win at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Shillong in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25. The victory propelled the Islanders to fourth place in the standings with 31 points.

The Highlanders started strong, with Macarton Nickson and Alaaeddine Ajaraie combining early on to create an opportunity in the eighth minute. Ajaraie’s header, however, flew just over the crossbar. Moments later, the Moroccan forward tried his luck again from the edge of the box but narrowly missed the target.

Despite NorthEast United FC dominating possession and creating multiple chances, Mumbai City FC broke the deadlock in the 41st minute. Lallianzuala Chhangte set up Brandon Fernandes, who delivered a pinpoint cross for Bipin Singh to head home into the top right corner.

The Highlanders pressed for an equalizer in the second half, but Mumbai City’s defense held firm. Nickson and Jithin MS came close, but their efforts failed to find the net. The Islanders, despite taking fewer shots, were clinical in their execution.

In stoppage time, Mumbai City FC sealed the win with a swift counterattack. Tiri provided the decisive pass, allowing Chhangte to slot the ball into the bottom right corner, securing all three points for the visitors.
