Shillong: Former Chief Minister and Leader of the Opposition Dr. Mukul Sangma on Saturday accused Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong of misleading the people of Meghalaya on the issue of the Inner Line Permit (ILP), alleging that Tynsong himself had played a key role in framing the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA), 2016.
Speaking to the media, Dr. Mukul reacted to allegations that he had failed to act decisively on the ILP during his tenure. He said such accusations were baseless and claimed that Prestone Tynsong, who now speaks against MRSSA, was part of the process that led to the enactment of the law in 2016.
“Prestone Tynsong has lied to the people of Pynursla and to the entire state. He was involved in framing MRSSA 2016, and today he is misleading the public on the ILP issue,” Dr. Mukul alleged.
The former Chief Minister further said that the MRSSA was designed as a mechanism to regulate and monitor the movement and settlement of people, and questioning its intent now amounted to political dishonesty. He asserted that blaming past governments while distancing oneself from one’s own role was unfair to the public.
Dr. Mukul also challenged the Deputy Chief Minister to an open debate if he claimed that the MRSSA could not be implemented effectively. “I am ready to debate with him anytime if he says MRSSA cannot be enforced,” he said.
The remarks add to the growing political sparring between the opposition and the ruling coalition over issues of ILP, migration and protection of indigenous rights in Meghalaya.
