Former Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Dr. Mukul Sangma has firmly dismissed speculation about his return to the Congress, asserting that the welfare of the people of Meghalaya outweighs all political considerations.
Reacting to his brother Zenith Sangma’s recent decision to rejoin the Congress, Mukul said the development has no bearing on his own political path.
Mukul reiterated that his exit from the Congress in 2021 was a well-considered step. “It was a conscious and deliberate decision. I did not leave without clarity or direction,” he said, adding that he already has a “scripted roadmap” for Meghalaya’s long-term progress.
The Leader of Opposition stressed that safeguarding the state’s interests is a shared responsibility and sometimes requires taking “alternative routes” in political life. He also clarified that his public service career is independent of family influence.
“Family is family, but once I chose public life, I ceased to be a monopoly of my family members,” he remarked. Mukul added that his body of work over decades stands as proof of his commitment to the people: “My work will speak for itself.”
On Zenith’s move to return to the Congress, Mukul said his brother may believe his aspirations lie elsewhere. “He might think shifting will fulfil his aspirations, but he may be wrong and I will prove it,” he said, expressing confidence in his own political approach.
