Meghalaya Orders Immediate Recall of Misleading ‘ORS Drink’ Products from Markets and Pharmacies

HEADLINES

Shillong — The Commissionerate of Food Safety, Meghalaya, has ordered the immediate removal and recall of all products labelled as “ORS Drink” or using the term “ORS” in a misleading manner from retail shelves across the state.

In a public notice issued from Shillong, the department directed that such products must be taken off all shops, supermarkets, pharmacies and doctors’ clinics without delay.

All wholesalers and distributors have been instructed to recall these products from retailers and return them to the respective manufacturing companies for proper relabelling in line with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) directives. They have also been asked to strictly follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure complete traceability of the recalled stock.

The Commissionerate said enforcement and supervision of this exercise will be carried out by Designated Officers and Food Safety Officers across Meghalaya to ensure full compliance and removal of misleading and non-standard products.

This action follows FSSAI Clarification Order No. RCD-15001/6/2021 Regulatory-FSSAI [E-1475], dated 15 October 2025, which clearly states that such beverages are misbranded and misleading, as they do not conform to the formulation and standards of Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) under the Food Safety & Standards Regulations.

FSSAI has clarified that ORS is a therapeutic formulation, meant for medical use, and cannot be marketed or sold as a regular beverage. Any product using the term “ORS” on its label for general consumption is therefore misbranded and misleading and must be withdrawn from markets, pharmacies and clinics without delay.

The Commissionerate has urged all stakeholders to comply immediately with the directions and called on consumers to be cautious and report any such products still being sold in violation of the order.
