Meghalaya Must Respect Public Opinion on Rail Connectivity, Says Minister Lahkmen Rymbui

HEADLINES

Shillong: Meghalaya Cabinet Minister Lahkmen Rymbui has said that the state government must respect the will of the people even as the Centre pushes for railway connectivity in the state. Speaking on the issue, Rymbui stated that while the NDA-led central government has adopted a policy to connect all states through railways and air routes to boost development and economic growth, Meghalaya’s situation is unique and requires sensitivity to public concerns.

He said there is widespread fear among sections of the population that the introduction of railway lines could open the door to large-scale settlement by outsiders, posing a threat to the indigenous tribal population. “The state government cannot ignore these apprehensions,” Rymbui said, adding that Meghalaya’s Sixth Schedule status gives constitutional protection to tribal interests and prevents the Centre from imposing decisions against the wishes of the people.

The minister further emphasised the crucial role played by shnong dorbars and raid dorbars in safeguarding communities and preventing illegal influx. He said these traditional institutions remain vital in protecting land, identity and demographic balance in the state.

Rymbui reiterated that development must go hand in hand with safeguarding the rights and sentiments of the people of Meghalaya.
