Shillong, Oct 19 — In a show of unity and reconciliation, the All Meghalaya Karbi Association (AMKA) and the Hill Farmers Union (HFU) Central Body have jointly appealed for the return of peace in Lapangap, so that farmers from Meghalaya can safely resume harvesting their ripe paddy.
During a meeting held at Sohliya village, AMKA President Robert Ronghang and HFU General Secretary Allfondbirth Kharsyntiew led an open discussion with local farmers, emphasizing the need for harmony and cooperation along the border.
The gathering observed a one-minute silence in memory of Oriwell Timu, a farmer from Karbi Anglong who tragically lost his life during the recent border clash in Lapangap. Leaders expressed deep sorrow and agreed to extend contributions to support his bereaved family.
Both organisations condemned the violence and urged farmers from Karbi Anglong and Meghalaya to maintain calm and restore normalcy, ensuring that agricultural work can continue without fear.
Kharsyntiew lauded AMKA’s leadership for their goodwill and expressed optimism that the dialogue would pave the way for lasting peace between border communities.
