Meghalaya Inaugurates First State-Owned University: A Milestone in Education

Ampati, January 13, 2025: Meghalaya celebrated a historic moment with the launch of its first state-owned institution, Captain Williamson Sangma State University, in Balalgre, South West Garo Hills. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma led the event, joined by Speaker Thomas A. Sangma, Deputy Chief Ministers Snaiwbhalang Dhar and T.D. Shira, Education Minister Rakkam Sangma, and other dignitaries.

Named after Meghalaya’s first Chief Minister, the university addresses the state’s long-standing aspiration for an autonomous education hub. It also provides an alternative to the Common University Entrance Test (CUET), allowing Meghalaya-based colleges to affiliate locally instead of with NEHU.

The ₹16.96 crore project, spanning 30 acres, offers postgraduate, skill-based, and diploma programs, with an initial intake of 30 students per course. Recognized under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956, the university symbolizes the state’s commitment to academic excellence and youth empowerment.

Key highlights included affiliation applications from major colleges, plans for a Shillong campus, and endorsements from leaders, including Vice Chancellor Prof. Vasanthi Vijayakumar, who emphasized a holistic educational vision.

The event was attended by MLAs, GHADC officials, academicians, religious leaders, and family members of Late Captain Williamson Sangma. This milestone marks a transformative chapter in Meghalaya’s educational journey.
