Shillong: The Meghalaya Government today inaugurated newly developed cultural and tourism amenities at Lum Pomblang and Madan Syiem, Smit, marking a major boost for the world-renowned Nongkrem Dance Festival. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma led the ceremony, joined by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, the Syiem and Dorbar of Hima Khyrim, and community leaders.
Speaking at the event, the Chief Minister reflected on his first visit to the festival site over three years ago, where he felt a strong need to better preserve, respect, and promote Meghalaya’s cultural identity. “We were determined to protect, preserve and promote our traditions,” he said, expressing satisfaction at seeing the project completed. He highlighted that improvements extended beyond the dance arena to surrounding grounds and community spaces.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to inclusive development, Sangma emphasised unity beyond regional lines and stressed that progress must translate into real benefits for people. He reiterated continued support for cultural programmes, tourism, healthcare, sports, and youth activities, and assured completion of key infrastructure projects in partnership with traditional institutions.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said the initiative reflects the government’s focus on equity and inclusivity, and revealed plans to beautify Iewduh Market for improved safety and convenience.
Former KHADC CEM Pyniaid Sing Syiem called the event historic, while the Syiem of Hima Khyrim, Dr. B. S. Syiem, said the new amenities are the result of years of partnership and will help safeguard land, culture, and identity for future generations.
