Shillong; Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has assured that the government will protect the services of all Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) teachers in Meghalaya, even after the SSA programme ends on March 31, 2026.
The assurance was given during a meeting held on Thursday with representatives of the Meghalaya SSA Schools Association (MSSASA), All Meghalaya SSA School Teachers Association (AMSSASTA) and the All Meghalaya Fourth Teachers’ Association (AMFTA). Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui and senior officials of the Education Department were also present.
The meeting focused on two key issues—government takeover of SSA schools to ensure job security, and pay enhancement for SSA teachers.
MSSASA president Aristotle C Rymbai said the discussion was positive and the chief minister made it clear that the government will protect the services of all SSA teachers. He added that the chief minister has also confirmed that the pay enhancement will come in the form of a formal pay scale structure.
The teachers’ associations have welcomed the assurance and said the details of the meeting will be shared with all SSA teachers in a general meeting to be convened soon, once the official minutes are received.
Meanwhile, over 3,332 of the 5,131 SSA schools in Meghalaya have already submitted No Objection Certificates (NOCs) to hand over their management to the state government. Of these, 298 schools are run by religious bodies and private managements.
