The Meghalaya government has decided to shut down the state-owned Mawmluh Cherra Cement Limited (MCCL) in Sohra after more than 70 years of operation.
The decision was taken during a cabinet meeting on Monday, and arrangements have been made to implement a Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS) for the employees.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma announced that the government has finalized and approved a special one-time plan for the closure of MCCL, ensuring the welfare of its employees.
The scheme was approved after thorough discussions with the MCCL workers, Sangma said, adding that the plan includes settling all pending dues.
According to the Chief Minister, the total cost for the settlement of employee benefits and other liabilities will amount to ₹100 crore. This will cover payments to approximately 300 employees and other outstanding obligations.
The decision to close MCCL comes after the failure of efforts to revive the company through a joint venture. Sangma stated that interested companies were unable to meet the necessary requirements, prompting the government to make this final decision.
