The Meghalaya government has declared February 21, 2025, as a general holiday in several districts in view of the elections to the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC). The decision was announced through an official notification issued by the Governor of Meghalaya.
The holiday will be applicable in East Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, South West Khasi Hills, Eastern West Khasi Hills, Ri-Bhoi, East Jaintia Hills, and West Jaintia Hills. Employees in these districts who are voters in the KHADC and JHADC constituencies will be granted special leave to cast their votes.
Additionally, Central Government employees registered as voters in these constituencies will also be entitled to special leave on polling day. Industrial workers, shift workers, daily wage earners, and casual laborers, including those working outside these constituencies, will receive a paid holiday as per legal provisions. Authorities have been directed to ensure compliance, with the Labour Commissioner overseeing private sector establishments and the Chief Inspector of Boilers and Factories instructed to reschedule weekly holidays for factories where needed.
Polling for the KHADC and JHADC elections is scheduled for February 21, with vote counting set to take place on February 24.
