Meghalaya Cabinet approves pay scale, job security for 23,000 Adhoc and SSA Teachers

HEADLINES

Shillong: In a major reform for Meghalaya’s education sector, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Friday announced that the State Cabinet has approved structured pay scales, annual increments, and job security for over 23,000 adhoc and SSA teachers.

Briefing reporters after chairing the final Cabinet meeting of the year, Sangma said the decision provides for enhanced base salaries linked to seniority, yearly increments, and coverage under the Contributory Provident Fund (CPF) with contributions from both the government and teachers. The policy will be implemented from April 1, 2026.

Describing the move as a “landmark decision” and a “major game changer,” the Chief Minister said the long-pending demand of adhoc and SSA teachers has now been addressed after extensive consultations. While acknowledging that the financial impact would be “quite significant,” he did not disclose specific figures.

Calling it “positive Christmas news” for teachers, Sangma said detailed implementation modalities will be finalised in the coming months, adding that the reform is expected to bring lasting stability and improvement to the state’s education system.
