The Meghalaya government has set a target to collect ₹500 crore in taxes from the sale of alcohol through the implementation of a new QR Code system on liquor bottles. This move replaces the previous Hologram system, with the aim of increasing tax revenue, which traditionally amounted to ₹200-300 crore annually.
Excise Minister Kyrmen Shylla announced the government’s goal and emphasized the need for thorough study and consideration before any decisions are made regarding the legalization of Khasi traditional liquor made from rice.
Regarding the prices of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL), the minister stated that shops are not allowed to sell alcohol above the set prices, urging people to report any overpricing to the government for necessary action.
