HEADLINES

Meghalaya Power Minister A.T. Mondal has revealed that the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) had an outstanding debt of ₹664 crore to the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC). However, after negotiations, the amount has been reduced to ₹564 crore.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Mondal stated that to clear this debt, MeECL is making monthly payments of ₹15.7 crore. He assured that if payments continue as scheduled, the entire debt will be cleared by 2026 or 2027.

The minister also mentioned that MeECL is making strict efforts to recover unpaid electricity bills from defaulters.

Regarding the electricity bill waiver scheme, Mondal informed that while the total waived amount stands at ₹119 crore, MeECL will receive only ₹25 crore from this scheme. The waiver applies only to domestic consumers using up to 5KW of power and does not cover factories or commercial establishments.
