Mawlynnong to Close for Tourists on Sundays from January 2026

HEADLINES

Mawlynnong, Nov 22 — The Mawlynnong dorbar has announced that the famed “Asia’s cleanest village” will remain closed to visitors every Sunday starting January 2026. Tourists will be allowed entry only from Monday to Saturday.

According to a notification issued by the dorbar, all tourism-related services — including restaurants, local shops and stalls, and even public toilets — will remain shut on Sundays.

However, tourists who have already checked into guest houses or homestays on weekdays and whose stay extends into Sunday will be exempted from the restriction.

The dorbar said the decision is driven by community needs, as most villagers devote Sundays to church services and religious activities, leaving hospitality providers unable to properly attend to visitors.

These constraints, it added, have at times inconvenienced tourists, especially senior citizens, and risked situations that could harm the village’s reputation as a responsible and welcoming destination. The weekly closure is intended to balance tourism with the social and spiritual needs of the community.
