Shillong – The Khasi Students Union (KSU) has called on the state government to follow through on its promise to relocate settlers from Them Iewmawlong before the year’s end, stressing that this issue is of greater importance than the reopening of the road nearby.
In a statement, KSU General Secretary Donald V Thabah emphasized that the government must act promptly to relocate these settlers within the next two months, cautioning against further delays or merely verbal assurances. He stated that relocation is a state matter and should not be influenced by external opinions.
“The road’s closure or reopening isn’t the main concern for the public or KSU. What’s essential is the relocation of the settlers,” he said.
The road from Them Iewmawlong to Bimola has been closed since a major clash in 2018. However, East Khasi Hills district authorities plan to reopen it starting November 4, 2024, with vehicle access permitted from 8 am to 4 pm.
