KSU Demands No Extension of NLU VC’s Tenure, Cites Mismanagement and Misuse of Funds

Shillong: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has demanded that the State Government and the governing authorities of the National Law University (NLU) ensure that the Vice Chancellor’s term, ending in February, is not extended under any circumstances.

KSU General Secretary Donald Thabah said the post should be advertised immediately after the VC’s tenure ends so that a “new and efficient” leader can take charge.

Thabah warned that any failure to act against what KSU alleges as “mismanagement and abuse of power” would imply the government’s weakness and show that the VC’s authority “supersedes the State and its people.”

He said the KSU had earlier met former Law Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh and then Revenue & Law Minister Lahkmen Rymbui to push for action based on findings from an RTI filed in May. According to the RTI, the KSU claims serious irregularities in NLU’s functioning, including alleged misuse of funds.

The RTI documents reportedly revealed that nearly ₹3 lakh was spent on alcohol and beverages for a climate investment programme, ₹45 lakh on salaries for resident and associate professors who did not take a single class, and ₹15 lakh on the VC’s travel expenses without clarification of whether they were personal or official.

Thabah said the Minister had earlier sought two months’ time to act, but before a follow-up meeting could take place, a cabinet reshuffle occurred. The KSU has now resubmitted the same documents to the new Minister and expects firm action.

He stressed that the matter concerns public money, institutional integrity, and the credibility of Meghalaya’s premier law university.
