The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Mawkyrwat Circle, in collaboration with Lawei Ban Kyrshan, a self-help group from Mawlangwir cluster, organized a wreath-laying ceremony at the statue of Sngap Singh Syiem in Mawtngam village, the birthplace of the revered leader. This event marked a tribute to the brave ruler of Hima Maharam, celebrated for his resistance against colonial rule.
The KSU has traditionally observed November 30 as a day of remembrance, honoring Sngap Singh Syiem’s pivotal role in extending the boundaries of Hima Maharam. The day is also recognized by the South West Khasi Hills District as a public holiday, allowing collective participation in the celebration of this freedom fighter and a notable son of Hima Maharam.
During the event, a newly constructed public restroom, developed by KSU Mawkyrwat Circle through KHADC funding, was inaugurated.
In a brief address, the KSU expressed disappointment over the lack of government attention and developmental initiatives in the area, despite its historical significance as the birthplace of Sngap Singh Syiem. They highlighted the absence of basic infrastructure, such as roads and pathways, and criticized elected representatives and the government for neglecting the development of the region.
The KSU reiterated its commitment to raising these concerns and urged authorities to prioritize the upliftment of the area, ensuring it receives the recognition and resources it deserves.
