KSU Calls for Abolition of ‘Backlog’ Recruitment, Proposes 50-40 or 90% Quota for Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo Communities

HEADLINES

The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has submitted its formal recommendations to the expert committee tasked with reviewing Meghalaya’s reservation policy. During the meeting, KSU President Lambokstarwell Marngar emphasized the need for a balanced quota system, suggesting that 50% of the reservation be allocated to Khasi-Jaintia communities and 40% to the Garo community, or alternatively, a combined 90% quota for all three communities.

In its proposal, the KSU also called for the cancellation of the existing ‘backlog’ recruitment system, advocating for new recruitment processes every year to fill vacant positions and prevent delays.

Marngar stated that the reservation policy must be updated to reflect the current socio-political and economic realities of the state, especially concerning education and employment.

KSU General Secretary Donald V. Thabah further highlighted the need for prioritizing Khasi-Jaintia candidates in teaching positions in the Khasi and Jaintia Hills, while ensuring Garo candidates are given preference in Garo Hills, particularly for early education roles.

The union hopes these changes will address the long-standing concerns over representation and fair access to opportunities for the state’s indigenous communities.
