KHADC to Strengthen Laws to Empower Villages in Fight Against Drugs

HEADLINES

The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has decided to introduce stronger provisions in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Administration of Elaka) Amendment Act to combat the growing drug menace in local villages.

Deputy Chief Executive Member (CEM) Pynshngaiñ N Syiem met with local village leaders and representatives of the Synjuk ki Nongsynshar Shnong ka Bri Hynñiewtrep (SNSBH) to discuss strategies for fighting drug abuse at the community level. The amended law will include the formation of Vigilance Committees that will work with law enforcement to curb drug trafficking and empower women’s groups and youth organizations to monitor illegal activities in villages.

Syiem also emphasized the importance of collaboration with government authorities at village entry/exit points to block the flow of drugs. He clarified that the KHADC’s actions would not conflict with national laws such as the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act of 1985, as the Council’s focus is on community-based initiatives to tackle local issues.
