The Jan Dhan Plus Program, a landmark initiative by Women’s World Banking (WWB) in collaboration with the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), was officially launched today at the Meghalaya Rural Bank (MRB). The program aims to transform the financial landscape for low-income women across rural India, deepening financial inclusion and economic participation.
Building on the success of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), the initiative seeks to encourage women to actively use their bank accounts for savings, insurance, pensions, and credit, thereby fostering long-term financial independence.
The program will particularly leverage Meghalaya’s matrilineal social structure and strong women-led community base, utilizing the widespread Meghalaya Rural Bank network, Business Correspondents, and Financial Literacy Centres to promote gender-responsive banking practices.
Speaking at the launch, Arun Kumar, Deputy General Manager of NABARD, highlighted the importance of women’s participation in shaping inclusive financial ecosystems. Dr. Venkateswar Rao of Women’s World Banking emphasized that the program represents a shift from financial access to financial empowerment. Shri Ashish Yadav, Chairman of Meghalaya Rural Bank, reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to ensuring that every woman in rural Meghalaya can benefit from this transformative initiative.
