Casino plan in Ri-Bhoi stopped altogether: CM

Shillong, September 15: The Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad K.Sangma informed that the Government has directed for all plans of establishing casinos in the State to be stopped,while stating that the people have not been lied or betrayed, for after the consultation with the civil society organisations and also religious congregations, the Government has stopped all processes towards the establishment of casinos.

It may be pointed out that the Minister of Taxation, James P.K Sangma informed in the Autumn Assembly that 3 firms have been given temporary licenses to run casinos in Ri-Bhoi. Following this information divulged by James Sangma, the Joint Action Committee Against Casinos from Ri-Bhoi expressed their anger at the Government for in the meeting with the JAC, it was informed that the plan has been stopped. The church leaders under the Khasi Jaiñtia Church Leaders Forum(KJCLF) also condemned the action of the Government for it has lied and betrayed the people by going ahead with the processes to establish casinos.

On being forwarded the question today, the Chief Minister said that at present the establishments that exist are only those which have been completed before the meeting with the civil society organisations and religious congregations, but after the meeting and consultation, all processes have been stopped for the establishment of casinos.

With regards to the grant of licenses to 3 firms, Conrad Sangma said that these licenses were issued on a temporary basis and have a validity of only 6 months.

On the other hand, the Chief Minister said that henceforth prior to taking any decision in connection with the establishment of casinos, the Government will consult the civil society organisations, the religious congregations’ leaders and the people first.
