HEADLINES

SHILLONG, May 27: The Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad K.Sangma said that the Government has decided to broaden the implementation of the Meghalaya Integrated Transport Project (MITP) to ease transportation by introducing transportation services which can also provide employment to the citizens besides being of benefit for the public.

Speaking today he said that through the MITP, the Government wants to implement it in four parts, the first by introducing electric buses for public transportation and for this a few buses will be brought in as a trial and be studied upto how much this process will help prior to moving ahead with it.

The second is to introduce school buses as intended and the arrangements to operate them will be upto the Government departments by outsourcing it to groups which can carry out the work. The intention is to ease traffic congestion in the town.

The third is to introduce high priced vehicles to transport the public especially the tourists, for which about 200 Innova cars will be bought distributed to entrepreneurs with a subsidy of 50% borne by the State Government and the other 50% to be funded by financiers or loans from banks.

He said that the introduction of this project is due to the scarcity of high-end cars to transport tourists because many drivers do not have the capacity to buy high-end cars but through this intention, the drivers will also be supported which will also promote tourism in the State.

The fourth, which the Chief Minister stated will be implemented by the MITP is for the 1917 vehicles which transport agricultural produce, and for this also about 200 pickup trucks have been allocated to be bought to be given to farmers and groups of entrepreneurs, and in this project also 50% will be borne by the State Government and the rest of the 50% will have to be borne by the ones intending to take the vehicles which can be through bank loans.
