The Hynñiewtrep Youth Council (HYC) Mawlai Circle met with the Executive Engineer (EE) of Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) Shillong West, Arju Dkhar on Thursday at Lumjingshai, demanding the repair of non-functional solar streetlights in Mawlai.
Led by President, Donboklang Kharlyngdoh and Vice President Bashan Lyngdoh Mawnai, the delegation highlighted that over 30 solar streetlights in the locality are no longer operational.
It may be recalled that these solar streetlights were installed across Shillong a decade ago as part of a project involving 300 units, costing approximately ₹4-5 crore.
According to the HYC, during discussions, the EE of Shillong West assured them that a team of Junior Engineers (JEs) will conduct an inspection in the coming days. Following the assessment, an estimate will be submitted to the higher authorities for necessary repairs.
The HYC Mawlai Circle urged the concerned department to expedite the restoration process to ensure proper street lighting for the residents of Mawlai.
