The Hynniewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC) has strongly condemned the circulation of derogatory, inappropriate and deeply insensitive content targeting women from the Khasi community on an application known as “Nolo.” The organisation said such content is misogynistic, demeaning and a direct attack on the dignity, identity and cultural values of the Khasi people.
In a statement, the HYC demanded immediate and effective action against those responsible for creating, promoting and circulating the offensive material. The council urged law-enforcement agencies and cyber authorities to take cognisance of the issue without delay, identify the perpetrators and initiate strict legal proceedings under relevant laws.
The HYC stated that targeting Khasi women in this manner reflects a dangerous and unacceptable mindset, stressing that freedom of expression cannot be misused as a shield to justify harassment, humiliation or the objectification of women, especially those belonging to indigenous communities.
The organisation said it has already informed the Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills district, and the Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Eastern Range, requesting immediate intervention. The HYC expressed hope that the authorities would act decisively and ensure accountability at the earliest to prevent the recurrence of such incidents and to safeguard the dignity of Khasi women.
