HITO Cracks Down on Poultry Trucks Allegedly Paying ₹30,000 to ‘High Level’ in Byrnihat

The Hynniewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation (HITO), Ri-Bhoi District unit along with the central body, conducted a pre-dawn operation in Byrnihat today to monitor poultry trucks entering Meghalaya from Assam without proper documentation.

The operation follows allegations that poultry trucks are being forced to pay up to ₹30,000 per vehicle to certain “High Level” groups to gain entry into the state without fulfilling legal requirements. During the inspection, HITO intercepted several trucks carrying poultry and filed an official complaint at the Byrnihat Police Station.

HITO expressed concern over reports that approximately 6-7 trucks were allegedly turned back by on-duty police personnel before reaching the Byrnihat check post, raising suspicions of possible collusion. Additionally, the organization claimed to have found an intoxicated police officer on duty during the operation.

HITO leaders urged the government, particularly the Veterinary Department, to implement stringent checks on poultry entering Meghalaya. They emphasized the need to ensure that poultry is safe for consumption to protect public health.
