Tura: A mob of several hundred people allegedly attacked and set fire to the office of the Garo Students Union at Chibinang on Monday night, in what is being viewed as retaliation for the earlier assault on Esmatur Mominin.
The incident comes hours after tensions erupted in Tura when Mominin was reportedly attacked while arriving at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office Tura to file his nomination for the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council Election 2026.
Chibinang town, located between Phulbari and Tikrikilla, lies in the plains belt and is largely inhabited by non-tribal communities. The area is also known as a major pineapple export centre.
Authorities had already imposed night curfew in the region due to the volatile situation following the earlier unrest in Tura.
Police and district officials are monitoring the situation closely as tensions remain high across parts of West Garo Hills.
