SHILLONG, December 21: The Cabinet Ministers on Tuesday approved the decision to make the best use of the scheme implemented by the Power Ministry of the Government of India for the revamping of power distribution in the state, which will be implemented for a period of 5 years.
The Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad Kongkal Sangma said that the Central Government in order to revamp the power departments in the state has implemented the Revamp Distribution Sector Scheme(RDSS), under which ₹3,05,984 crores has been allocated for all the states in the country.
He said that the Government, in the first phase has decided to seek ₹2500 crores from this scheme. As per the statement of the Chief Minister, through this scheme, the State Government will get a subsidy of ₹1350 per meter, while the remaining will be given to the private companies which are partnering with the State Government for the installation of the smart meters. He said that cost of equipments and infrastructure will be met on a 90:10 basis or 90% from the Central Government and 10% from the State Government.
Sangma said that the implementation of this scheme may begin from 2022 as some time will be required to create an awareness amongst the public with regard to the installation of smart meters, which may take upto 8-9 months.
