The Meghalaya government has implemented strict vehicle restrictions on the Umiam Bridge to ensure its longevity and prevent structural damage. Only single-axle vehicles weighing up to nine metric tonnes and with a height limit of 2.8 meters are permitted to use the bridge. The measure is aimed at reducing stress on the structure and preventing deterioration.
To address the transportation challenges caused by these restrictions, the government is working on alternative routes, including a proposed four-lane road from Umiam to Shillong. Additionally, the VIP Road project, a 23-kilometer stretch connecting Umroi Airport to Mawlai, is nearing completion. Once operational, it will allow heavier vehicles to bypass the Umiam Bridge, easing traffic congestion and ensuring smoother connectivity.
These initiatives reflect the government’s commitment to maintaining infrastructure safety while improving transport efficiency in the state.
