Tension flared up once again in Maikhuli village under Jirang constituency and Hima Mylliem on Tuesday as a fresh clash broke out during the installation of electric light poles. The situation turned violent, with the Rangbah Shnong (village head) reportedly assaulted amid the confrontation.
According to sources, people allegedly from Assam entered the area and attempted to disrupt ongoing development work being carried out by MeECL along with local residents. The dispute escalated into a heated argument and later physical clashes between the two sides.
The incident occurred when MeECL officials and villagers were installing around seven light poles, starting from the Maikhuli village fish pond area. Opposition from the Assam side led to verbal abuse, which soon spiralled into violence.
It may be recalled that both Meghalaya and Assam had constituted a Peace Committee on November 2, 2025, to maintain harmony in the area. However, the latest clash has raised serious concerns over law and order, especially amid fears that the long-protected community fish pond of Maikhuli could fall under Assam’s control.
