A Special POCSO Court in East Jaintia Hills district has sentenced Apurba Das to rigorous imprisonment after finding him guilty in a case registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The case was registered in December 2022 at the Khliehriat Women Police Station and investigated thoroughly by the district police.
According to official information released by the Superintendent of Police, East Jaintia Hills, a case was registered vide Khliehriat Women Police Station Case No. 62(12)2022 under Sections 8, 9(p) and 10 of the POCSO Act. The investigation was entrusted to Sub-Inspector O. Nongtdu, who carried out a detailed probe into the matter. Following completion of the investigation, a charge sheet was filed vide Charge Sheet No. 04/23 dated February 15, 2023.
After completion of the trial, the court of Smti. B. Khriam, Special Judge (POCSO), East Jaintia Hills District, Khliehriat, delivered its judgment holding the accused guilty under Section 10 of the POCSO Act. The court sentenced Apurba Das to undergo rigorous imprisonment for a period of five years and imposed a fine of ₹10,000. In addition, the accused was also found guilty under Section 8 of the POCSO Act and sentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of ₹5,000.
The police stated that the case reflects the commitment of the district police to conduct meticulous investigations in cases involving crimes against children and to ensure that offenders are brought to justice through due legal process.
